Me and wife used toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls. Cut into 2 inch length set on used paper plate or news paper, put small quantity dryer lintel then saw dust and top off with more dryer lint , pour in wax and if it runs out bottom wait until it cools of and reuse wax. Works great.

So I've recently lost my dad and now I have to learn everything, because my dad didn't teach how to start a fire. But he did teach me how to prep fire wood and split kindling. This saves my day. I'm only 16 years old and I have to be the man of the house. You are a blessing for me sent by our creator. Thank you so much for teaching me.

Truck traders. Pick them up all the time. Store them in the bench. Gather bark all summer in a big trash can. Pile one truck trader in your lap. 2 today, they are thin. Lay bark and thing on the truck trader and light. Open ash trey and go get wood. It's so simple. I use a bunch of them in the spring and fall. As soon as it's cold the fire never goes out here.

I have a catalytic stove, and I find the top-down method takes a much longer time to get the catalytic burner up to temperature. If I do the traditional bottom-up approach, I can control the speed of the fire build and get the catalyst going in under 30 minutes, but of course this needs my attention ever 5min or so. When I tried the top-down method, the cat was still sitting at 400F an hour later.

Ive been doing this for a couple of years now with my Fireplace insert . I can get a full armload of birch jackpine mix lit with a handfull of cedar kindling and shavings from the planer. light it and walk away ! another neat trick for the cold huntcamp stove is a few chunks of charcoal on top lit before I light the kindling a few minutes later, warms up the cold flue for a good efficient smoke free draft :)

So I tried this tonight. The fire starters I already knew but this method of starting fires in your wood stove was amazing. I will have to do it a few more times to prove it out but the first time tonight I got amazing results. I left it and went out and did evening chores and when i came back had a nice bed of coals. Stoked it and loaded. Great technique, been lighting fires for 50 years and didn’t know this trick. Thank you.

Building the start on top only works because the coals eventually fall to the bottom and the actual fire burns normally from the bottom up. Side note; ANY stove that needs the door open to get the fire going is a poor design.

Secondly, you've been "doing it wrong [your] whole life?" Really, that implies you've never successfully started a fire. Maybe you should get your wife to help.

Why is it grey? because each dyed fiber reflects only a couple frequencies of light. That means it's absorbing all the other colors. Black clothing absorbs nearly all frequencies of light. White clothing reflects nearly all frequencies of light. The average of all your clothes absorbs, ie the lint from all your clothes will be absorbing nearly all frequencies of light, but also has a little bit of reflection. Mix white and black together, what do you get? Grey! Science Rules!

Easy way to clean the glass on a wood stove: Take a very damp paper towel and lay it on the cold fine ashes. The ashes will stick to the paper towel. Use the paper towel and ashes to clean the glass. Works so amazingly easy. Finish up with another clean paper towel.

Thank you. All really good stuff. Allow me to say just one thing: I will never again leave a wood stove door open. I was charging ours on a very cold winter day, had cracked the door open a little bit, then got called to the phone. Fifteen minutes later I remembered the open door. I raised down stairs to find my stove heating at 900 F with the chimney red hot ten inches above the stove top. I consider myself and family extremely fortunate to have made this discovery when I did. As a result, a baffle plate in the chamber was warped and never fitted properly thereafter. Door control valves are there to let air in. I concluded that opening the stove door means you are too much in a hurry; never a good idea with fire.

Sorry but I do it the another way, I (wife) take some garbage can and pick up branches dropped from my oak trees and then lay a 2-3in branch against each side of the stove and then add 2-3 handfuls of the dropped material followed by a shot of lighter fuel ( grill stuff ) and then lay the 1/2-1in stuff on tip followed by my split wood, no problems, one match does the job, she picks o the sticks so mower does not hit in mowing season but do your way when deer hunting
