I think it is very possible that humans and warm blood animals, as they are radiating heat, and other 'dark' but hot things, will Be more visible to the ir sensors, than cooler objects.. I don't know what frequencies of ir the goggles are sensitive to, but I think it would have been interesting to see how visible an animal, a human or an oven would have been, without the illuminator! Otherwise it was an excellent test!

The illuminator is obviously intended for zero available light situations, in which case you're seeing the same thing surveillance cameras do. The test would be to see how well it does in low light without artificial illumination, I'm guessing as I know next to nothing about it.

I was hoping you would’ve done a starlight test. Back in the late 1990’s I owned a ITT monocular night-vision. I lived in a city, so I learned quickly that night vision is kind of useless in a city environment. Too many light sources in the city that ruin your field of view in night vision. Night vision works perfectly indoors when you use an Illuminator. However if the illuminator is visible to the person or persons being watched ( if used for security) then your position would be compromised, as you can be seen. My old illuminator had gave off a dim red light that could be seen. Most people wouldn’t need night vision indoors used under the circumstances you presented in your video. I’m interested in how they work outdoors and what the field of view is. How far away downrange does the vision work? Etc etc.

Agreed. Cool vid but essentially incomplete info without a night test. No one is going to use it to ramble around their shop to find the light switch. I plan to buy a sail boat and having a couple of these would be great to avoid hazards at night.

The amount of light the illuminator returns to the objective drops with 1/r^2. So the real test of the illuminator is outdoors with a cloudy night and different distances. A test in the garage does not properly test the illuminator.

@Mark R The video is a little cul de sac commando-ish. FYI, I did get the Firefield and it actually works pretty good. A typical use for me would be when I'm up in northern WI and want to take a quick look around. It will turn the black outline of a tree at ~200 feet into a decent picture where you can pick out the leaves with just a small campfire behind you. Farther than that it becomes more of a problem with the limitations of the 4x image magnification than the light amplification. Best use is tracking down the kids out there when the little a-holes decide to hide on you when it's time to get them to sleep. One thing it doesn't work well for is putting it up to your eye and trying to walk around, with the 4x magnification and narrow field of view being the problem.

When o was on the Military Police Special Recovery Team as a sniper late 70s we had the old starlight sniper scope from mid 60s. I think a PV 7 if memory served. Better than off center viewing but nearly useless ion a dark night. Heavy and huge, It mounted yo the carry handle of an M16 but was suitable for a crew served weapon .

If it has a visible red light on it, its not meant for "security" purposes. Its meant for night hunting. Most animals can't see red light so it would work well for that purpose.

Just an FYI, night vision can not work in pitch black. The system is designed to draw in low light to give an image. So without it using the IR flash light (built in) not even the military grade would work. The best way to test these is under a night sky or in a dim house. What was shown here is that the details are sharper on the pv14s and it draws in more of the ambient light.

i was gifted basically the same one. its the same looking design and shape. And i do like it, personally i can't justify spending anywhere even a 1000 dollars for a night vision system. i feel like i have no real need for that special of night vision optic. Its only thing if you specifically need a quality optic like that for night time jobs or what have you. But i find that the cheaper on though not as quality its worth it. I live out in the sticks and sometimes if i hear something making a bit more noise than usual i can grab it and curiously look around outside but other than that i havent needed to use it for anything else.

I Have The Exact Same Unit And Modified It With A T 50 Heavy Duty IR Flashlight 🔦 And I Can See Every Bit As Well As With A Gen 2 Or 3 At A Fraction Of The Cost ! Works Well As A Spotting Scope Or For Surveillance ! The Only Thing Is It Cant Be Mounted On A Weopon !
