Fun fact, it's also used in wet offset printing at around a 20 percent mix with the water to keep the plates clean. If the mix is too high all staff will be drunk by morning tea break. Most printers have an alcohol problem anyway, I think this is why lol

Just from reading some info from the CDC, 70% is actually better than 90% isopropyl alcohol for disinfection purposes. I got the rough idea that the alcohol needs some water to effectively interact with microorganisms for disinfection to take place, and 90% obviously has less water in mixture. You can always dilute it down, I suppose, but 70% seems to be the sweet spot. 90% is better for cleaning electronics and the like, because it evaporates with very little residue.

Just in case anyone pays attention to this comment, 70% alcohol is usually better disinfectant than the higher 90% alcohol for bacteria. One of the best commonplace explanations (its not perfect but it works decently at least for bacteria) I've heard that explains is cooking an egg with an intact yolk. If you cook the egg with too much heat, the outside will start to harden and will eventually become burnt. With bacteria, an increase in temperature matches decently with the affect of temperature with an egg. The higher the alcohol percentage, the higher amount the outside will be affected before the inside (just like an egg with temperature). If the outside of the bacteria becomes too "cooked" by the alcohol it becomes to hard and almost impervious. If you lower the heat/alcohol content, the egg/bacteria has a better chance of cooking the yolk/bacteria, while the outside is still soft or permeable. Obviously, this analogy is somewhat flawed since heat can penetrate this barrier better that alcohol usually can. 70% alcohol seems to be the best commonly available compromise when looking at the data. If you need the studies, I'll happily provide them! :)

Be careful when using your home made ice pack (or any chemical cold pack for that matter) as they will reach a temperature much below 32F (0C). Fresh water, when it freezes, drops to a low of 32F. Using that as a cold pack, the danger of frostbite is relatively low. However, if you are using the alcohol/water mix or a commercial cold pack frostbite is real possibility.

IPA is also a great degreaser, I have use it on things like aircraft landing gear. To an overhead extractor fan over a cooker. It is great stuff. Also ipa is good to spray directly onto a icy window. I have found it to be far more effective than dedicated de-icing products. Keep a spray bottle of it under the seat during winter and you are all set.

Another use is an old magicians trick of burning a cloth, usualy a hankerchief, then (restoring) back in perfect condition. You mix rubbing alcohol with water l think it was 50/50 then ignitng it after soaking the cloth. Lots of flames and the water kepts the cloth from igniting, so after the flames subside a couple of magic words with a little flourish and the cloth is still in perfect condition. Best done with scantily clad assistant to help distract. l did this in school (don't think they would let a kid do it now ) in the 60's . Only took 3 trys before l got the ratio right, but l supplied the hankerchiefs so no one got upset. l didn't have the assistant , proably never would have gotten the mix right if l had. LOL

I am an Urgent Care physician. I enjoy suturing wounds, and was trained in facial plastic surgery techniques as a medical student in a very busy ER. I also know tips and tricks for small wound treatments that do not require sutures. I'm sure you could use them. One is packets of sterile strips that hold the cleansed wound closed, with wound edges right next to each other. Don't use betadine, use chlorhexidine for cleansing. Sterile strips can be effective but tend to fall off over time and with movement. Benzoin tincture is a sticky liquid that makes bandages stay on. It comes in single use crush tubes with applicators on one end. It is painted on the skin parallel to the wound edge but not in it, and allowed to dry. The sterile strip is applied to one side of the wound, in the middle of the wound, perpendicular to the wound. As the wound is held shut with the thumb and index finger of one hand, the sterile strip is pulled slightly taut with the other hand and pushed onto the benzoin on the other side of the wound, locking it. Trim the ends of the strips not stuck on benzoin with small scissors (cleaned in alcohol). Do not make the strips too tight or one edge will go under the other, preventing healing. Apply more strips to the middle of the gaps in the wound until the wound is completely closed. A one inch wound might need three narrow strips. Wide strips don't allow much movement. If the wound can stay dry, a layer of single use Dermabond glue can be applied over the entire wound. This is the only time I use skin glue. Unfortunately it can easily fill the void between two opposing wound edges, preventing healing of the wound. Another tip. If you cannot get a good grip on the skin to close it for the strips, apply benzoin to the thumb and index fingertips of the glove, and allow to dry. Once dry, the sticky glove tips will enable you to approximate (close the wound) enough to lock the end of the sterile strip with the proper tension. Good Luck!

Please do not put it in your ears, it kills cells and denatures the proteins and lipids that your body is made from. On your hands or skin in small amounts it is of less concern because the cells are dead and the surface area allows fast evaporation. It also has more specific toxic effects as well as a flammable risk if misused.

Drinking alcohol (ethanol) and rubbing (isopropyl) for the most part. The percent has to be higher than 70 to make hand sanitizer. If you use 70% alcohol and dilute it down with something like aloe vera gel, it will dilute to a percentage thats not effective.

Good for scratches but definitely not for wounds. Just putting isopropyl on your skin isn't good, because your skin absorbs it and it goes right for your liver, not really a big issue putting it on a scratch or two unless you've got a load of scratches, don't want to be absorbing too much at any one time. But putting it into an open wound is especially a bad idea, gonna hit your liver hard.

Windshield wiper fluid is often 50/50 Alcohol/water. The blue colorant is just food coloring. A additional use is to thin latex paint. If you thin latex paint with just water it breaks down the latex and destroys the paint, but you can thin latex paint with windshield wiper fluid and it won't break it down. I use it 50/50 with latex paint through a HVLP gun to get beautiful, brush stroke free, Int. door coverage. The blue tint is invisible even when using white paint.

I love this video! I have been down grading on household/cleaning products. You can buy things for everything but really, if you get the good old standard products you can do so many things! Alcohol, Ammonia, Vinegar, Sodium carbonate, Hydrogen peroxide, Hydrochloric acid. My mattress is spot less and like new; Sprinkel Sodium carbonate on it and then spray some peroxide on it, brush it in and wait. Then with the vacuum cleaner over it. Sweat markes are gone! Don't forget to put vinegar in the washing machine with every wash to get cleaner clothes and avoid limescale Throw a kilo of sodium carbonate in the toilet, a liter of vinegar, wait a minute while everything is bubbeling and than a bucket of hot water. Toilet clean and drain will be clean Water from the dryer, use it to make window cleaner with a few drops of dishwash detergent and ammonia. Or clean the floors with it without stripes (and use this water in the iron) clean the shower with vinegar, cheap and effective Iron cleaning. Put some vinegar on paper towels and put the iron on it. It will be easy to clean off the brown stuff after a while etc etc etc Yeah yeah, we're not all married and even if you are (like me) most of us do help in the household

I healed a torn rotator cuff using alcohol ice pack (mentioned in video) and a heating pad, cycling back and forth between them 15 to 30 minutes at a time. Took a week or so, but also helped with the pain.

FYI: If you cannot find isopropyl alcohol then check your local liquor store for Everclear which is 95% pure grain alcohol and works just as well in most cases. I use it for making my own cologne and body sprays with essential oils. We also make our own bathroom spray using 90% or better alcohol and cinnamon essential oil (doTerra Cassia.)

Reason 1: disinfectant, Reason 2: disinfectant (again) lol Also, if the ratio is 8:1, it should be 16 tbsp of water, and 2 tbsp of alcohol (instead of 1 tbsp as mentioned in the video)

Wonder if putting this into your washer fluid tank if it would help melt the ice on the windshield or if the alcohol would just evaporate too soon?

We East Coast men like to use Rubbing Alcohol on our chainsaw bars and chains. Does a great job keeping them looking brand new, especially after using them for heavy duty jobs such as trimming the rhododendrons. No one likes a used-looking chainsaw, right? Almost as bad as a pickup truck with dirt in the bed.

Regarding ticks... In my (firsthand) experience, disease-ridden deer ticks (and most likely any other tick species) will NOT EVER back themselves out voluntarily - once they have dug in and embedded themselves in flesh. These little devils have to be literally "torn" out - most likely leaving their probiuscus or rostrum still imbedded. I use fine kelly (surgery) clamps to remove as best I can. However...once they are removed, I pour (douse) copious amounts of 90% alcohol all over the bite site using cotton to wipe up. I soak the clamp ends as well. This is where the rubbing alcohol comes in handy - and is highly effective in killing any lurking microbes in the wound. For that reason alone we keep plenty of 90% on hand.

I give people alcohol prep pads to sniff for nausea in the ambo all the time! It's perhaps more magical than Zofran. Alcohol though is not a great disinfectant for wounds or cleaning before IVs and such. The contact time needed makes it not as good as other products, that's why all but the cheapest start kits have switched to other things like chlorahexamine(?). Still great for all sorts of stuff and better than licking a wound when other stuff is lacking.

Two bonus uses: 1. It cleans any resin build up from marijuana, so you can use it to clean pipes, bongs.. what ever. 2. They use it for pulling the THC out of other parts of the marijuana, to produce "wax" Learned a lot about marijuana production on a recent trip to Colorado when I toured a producer's facility.

Caution: Never use alcohol for tick removal. alcohol makes them throw up and increases your or your pets chance of infection, best way to remove tick is to just pull it out, use alcohol to desinfect the area afterwards.

Interestingly, the water is a required part of the disinfecting ability. Pure alcohol is not as effective.

When cleaning a wound it should be the last resort, as it kills cells in the wound. Soap and water is better.

Love watching your show!! Thought you might like to add to your list of things to do. Mine refers to remote controls; TV, video and the rest!!? When stored away they can get a little damp and unable to function. The first thing one does is put a new battery in! I split them in half and wipe them down, internally, with the magic liquid and hey presto bingo!!!! Works every time!!! Have a nice day!!!

The term "rubbing alcohol" is unknown here in the UK. Iso alcohol may be available at chemist's shops (pharmacies like Boots) but has to be signed for as it can be used to make explosives. The nearest thing to it that everybody knows here is called "surgical spirit". The "hospital smell" that so many people detest! This was once used medicinally to clean the skin before an injection, etc. Now they use disposable wipes. Then there's methylated spirits, coloured blue or purple, used as a general purpose solvent for cleaning, spirit lamps, starting Tilley and Coleman pressure lamps, etc. All these compounds are toxic because they contain methanol and also have additives & colouring to make them unpalatable. Great care should be taken with their use and storage especially around children and animals. Finally, don't take anything I say as gospel. I'm just a layman.

Clear vodka will do all that plus less poisonous. With vodka you can make your own herbal tinctures.
